Old Stiles Courthouse

This imposing, slightly eerie husk of an ancient courthouse marks the place where a bustling little town once thrived until a new railroad bypassed the town and went through Big Lake instead. Today, the settlement of Stiles has dwindled to just a few buildings and families and is barely on the map. But if you visit, you can see this ghostly local landmark, read the large plague placed outside, and gain a sense of how things once were.

The courthouse is an intriguing historic scene of explorers, disasters, and gunfights, which is certainly worth the visit since it’s just a few miles up the highway from Big Lake, in Stiles, just off Highway 137. To get the most from your visit, you can read the courthouse’s history online before you go.

Fort Concho Historic Site

A short drive to the east will bring you to the wonderfully preserved Fort Concho, which is a National Historic Landmark. It’s a fort and army barracks built in 1867 to protect frontier settlements and patrol the region. The legendary fort served as headquarters to many famed units and commanders, which you can learn all about with a guided tour. There’s a museum with many exhibits, including cannons and other weaponry from the era.

It’s located at 630 South Oakes, San Angelo. The thirty-mile drive eastward to find it can be a very pleasant journey through the stark and beautiful Texan landscape. The powerful air conditioning of your 2023 Chevrolet Traverse LT Cloth will ensure you never have a moment of discomfort on the road, no matter the heat outside.

Hangar 25 Air Museum

For a unique and memorable delve into the history of military aircraft and the Army Air Corps in Texas, head north to the neighboring town of Big Spring. This is a wonderful little air museum inside a perfectly restored hangar from the World War Two era. The Big Spring Bombardier School was a thriving hub of activity during the war, and today you can step back to those times with fantastically detailed tours given by volunteer veterans who intimately know the exhibits.

There are several aircraft, including a B-52, which you can climb inside to really get a feel of what it was like to be a pilot. You can find the museum at 1911 Apron Drive, Big Spring.
