Your radiator is designed to remove heat from the engine and to regulate the engine temperature. It is a vital part of the cooling system, and if it fails your car will start to overheat. We have listed some of the signs below that that you may need a radiator repair. As your Chevy dealer in Big Lake, TX we can help you.

The Thermostat Isn’t Working

The thermostat is fitted to the top of your radiator hose, and it controls the flow of coolant through your engine. As coolant flow is essential to controlling the engine temperature, a damaged or malfunctioning thermostat will cause your engine to overheat. A failed thermostat usually gets stuck in either the open or closed position. If the thermostat is closed, the coolant won’t flow and your engine temperature will quickly rise. A thermostat stuck in the open position will keep your engine temperature too low, and you will use more fuel.

Rust on the Radiator

Your engine is protected against the elements, and as it is a closed system it should never be exposed to liquid damage that can cause rust. Damage to the radiator or its hoses can cause hot coolant to spray into the engine compartment. This coolant will dry and can start to cause rust on the radiator. Once rust starts, it will spread and weaken the radiator further.

 A Bad Radiator Cap

The radiator cap keeps the coolant in the system pressurized, and also keeps the coolant in the system. If the radiator cap suffers damage or wear, it may not keep the system pressure constant. If the pressure rises too high, it can cause serious damage to the cooling system, and if the pressure is too low, the coolant will start to boil off.

Engine Temperature Is Too High

Coolant flows through the system, absorbs heat from the engine, and then enters the radiator. The heat absorbed is vented from the radiator to the outside air, the coolant is cooled and then recycled through the system. If your engine temperature is constantly too high, there is likely a failure in the cooling system. Possible causes are that the radiator may be damaged, there could be a blockage in the cooling system, or the coolant may need to be changed. We can check all of these for you, and make any needed repairs.

A radiator that is not working correctly is a serious problem. If it is not repaired or replaced, and the engine temperature remains high, your car can suffer serious damage, for example, a blown head gasket.
