If you’re looking for a compact crossover SUV, the 2020 Chevrolet Trax should be the one you’re looking at. This is the perfect all-wheel-drive vehicle for a family that needs to run around the urban landscape while still having the freedom to head off for adventures.
More Space Than You Expect
One of the coolest things about this smallest SUV from Chevy is the fact that it doesn’t look it. Despite having a wheelbase that’s actually nearly 6 inches shorter than a Toyota Corolla, you get nearly 6 cubic feet more of cargo space and room for five passengers.
Inside, the front seats are perfectly adequate for adults, and the back has plenty of headroom even for tall people. There’s not as much legroom in the back–as you’d expect in a compact–but it’s still perfect for kids. You’ll also appreciate that the controls are all within easy reach, and the driver’s seat is six-way power adjustable with good road visibility.
Trims and Options
There are three trims–LS, LT, and Premier–and just one choice for engine on the Trax. What you get is a 1.4-liter, turbocharged engine that will give you 138hp. It has good acceleration and returns a firm ride. Most drivers are pleasantly surprised at how responsive and stable it is to drive.
The lower trims come in vinyl and the Premium in synthetic leather. All trims have a 7-inch touchscreen and an easy-to-use infotainment system that works with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. At the Premier trim, you also get a Bose sound system that really kicks things up a notch.
Performance
This SUV is a true crossover. It’s not made to take you on long, rugged off-roading adventures–it’s made to perform brilliantly on narrow roads and tight parking spaces while still providing plenty of room for the family and enough power to get you out of town for the occasional trip.
The steering is very responsive in tight situations and at slow speeds, and the brakes perform beautifully.
Look and Feel
This crossover is priced and designed for those looking to break into the SUV segment, often for the first time. That said, Chevy has done amazingly well at creating a budget SUV that doesn’t look as budget as it is.
The Trax has a rugged look, doesn’t stand out in any offensive way, and has a modern, sleek look to it. And while the back seats are designed for holding car seats and boosters rather than delivering amazing comfort for adult passengers, the front seats deliver in comfort and roominess.
Safety Features
The Trax can be equipped with a variety of safety features, like lane-departure alert, rear cross-traffic alert, rear park assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The IIHS gave the Trax a Good rating for 2020, and the NHTSA gives it 5/5 stars for five of the test categories and a 4/5 in the rollover category.
