Exterior

The designs of these trucks is pretty similar in some ways. That's to be expected--after all, they're both made for the same kind of working situations. Both have lots of options for changing up the cab and bed design to meet your needs. Both have 17" silver steel tires, tinted window options, heated side mirrors, and a tailgate design for the rear cargo door.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the 2020 Ford F-150 is its Ford-ness. In other words, it is immediately recognizable as a Ford product, with the visibility dip in the front window line really standing out. The Chevy, meanwhile, has a more sculpted look while still retaining a "truck" look that communicates seriousness. The Ford is more traditional, while the Chevy is more modern-looking.

Interior Features

Both trucks have highly functional interiors. While you can go up to get lots of bells and whistles on higher trims, the basic working models are made to work. There's plenty of storage space and lots of functional elements, but not much in the way of luxury with either model at the base level.

Both offer upgrades to leather seats, nicer trim detailing, and heated steering wheels. And while the F-150 used to have more cabin space, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 now matches it, particularly in the back seat. The base seat trim in the Chevy is a hard-wearing vinyl, while in the Ford you get cloth. On the other hand, the Ford has a bit more visibility for the driver. Other than that, the interior features are pretty much on par.

Engines

The Ford base engine is a 3.3-liter V6 that can do 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Depending on some of your other choices, you can haul 5,000 to 7,700 pounds with it. The Chevy, meanwhile, has a turbocharged, 4-cylinder, 2.7-liter engine that can manage an impressive 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. The Chevy can haul between 6,700 and 7,000 pounds. The Chevy also comes with two different diesel options: a 5.3-liter, 355hp and a 6.2-liter V8 with 420hp.

The Ford, meanwhile, does have a High Output engine version with EcoBoost that can manage 450hm and 510 lb-ft of torque. Ultimately, if you need the maximum possible towing power, without reference to cost, Ford is your best bet. If you want the best towing power at the lower trims and more economical prices, the Chevy is the clear winner.

Safety Features

In terms of safety, these trucks come out almost identical in NHTSA crash tests, for overall five-star awards. The Chevy scored 5 stars in the frontal-crash, driver to Ford's 4 stars, but otherwise they nearly identical.

Both come with front and side-imact airbags for the driver and front passenger and side-curtain airbags for the front seat. At the base level, both have traction control, available parking assist, low-tire-pressure warning, daytime running lights, delay-off headlights, and lots of other options at the higher trims.
